I use sledgehammers on a daily basis in my job. They aren't very big. They're just made of steel and are VERY heavy. The average adult male hand is bigger than a sledgehammer head. Big Show might be able to fit a whole sledgehammer head in his palm and cover it with his fingers.

I've seen his hand and they had an impression of his hand at a pre-Wrestlemania show a few years back.
